April

Late Rain
A Lullabye

The rain is falling as you sleep.
Windows become kalidesacopes
Tall grass bends as if in prayer
The rain is falling as you sleep

The night fills with fear,
Each sleep is a rehearsal for not being here.
The rain is falling as you sleep

In unseen fields ponds fragment
Rain runs like rivers through the air
The sky is a misty cataract, the stars are blurred
Rain is falling as you sleep

On broken roofs and ruined barns
On the carcasses of old machines
On all the valleys darkened farms
Rain is falling as you sleep.

Now terror hums beneath the skin
In the mouth the night stagnates
And the heart fills with adrenalin,
Rain is falling as you sleep

It has washed so much away
Blink and all one loved is gone
Memory breaths out, redolent of oblivion
The rain is falling as you sleep.
